This low-cost mini USB to Serial adapter is ideal for mobile applications and devices. It is utilizing the low-cost PL2303 chip from Prolific which makes it easy to add a serial port to your desktop or laptop, for general office, commercial and industrial use. The serial port is automatically configured as an additional COM port with Windows 98, ME, 2000, XP, Vista and some older versions of Linux and Mac. This low-cost adapter is not recommended for Windows 7 and Vista and it is not compatible with Windows 8. It is only recommended for older operating systems. After installing the drivers for the Prolific USB to serial adapter a virtual COM port will be created in your operating system's Device Manager. The COM port can be accessed and used as if it was a standard built-in COM port. Notice however as with all serial adapters that there usually is a latency (data delays) when communicating with serial devices. If you wish to avoid these data latencies we recommend using a regular RS232 serial port instead, for example such as a serial RS232 PCI card which can be installed in most desktops.
Be aware that Windows assigns the COM port number to the adapter depending on which COM port number is available in the system. Usually the next available COM port number is assigned to the adapter. If you disconnect the USB serial adapter and after a while re-connect it again it may or may not be assigned the same COM port number, so always check in your operating systems Device Manager to see what COM port number is has been assigned. USB serial adapters with COM port retention exists, these will be assigned the same COM port number each time it is connected.

You can check multiple ports at the same time by opening multiple sessions, putting the loopback adapter on one port, and trying to type into each session. When you can see what you are typing, you know that the COM port is working and you can see which port number the physical serial port is. Close the window for the port that you just tested to speed up the testing of the remaining serial ports.
Hello Jessica, Unfortunately, InstaCal does not bring out the digital testing feature for the USB-2408. For various reasons that feature was never enabled for the USB-2408 series. Your options for configuring and testing your digital I/O will depend on what your plans are for software programming. TracerDAQ will allow you to monitor up to 8 inputs. I would suggest you get the above download as it also has the registry change required to stop the drive creating a new serial port for every switch you connect. With the reg change made (and a reboot), windows will keep reusing the Serial port number you first get when you swap from switch to switch.

On 29 September 2014, FTDI released an updated version of their USB-to-Serial driver for Windows on their website.[4] Users who manually downloaded the new drivers reported problems.[5] After Windows drivers became available on 14 October (Patch Tuesday) via Windows Update, it was reported by users of hardware enthusiast forums and websites that the drivers could soft-brick counterfeit and software-compatible clones of the chips by changing their USB "Product ID" to "0000". The change prevents the chip from being recognised by drivers of any OS, effectively making them inoperable unless the product ID is changed back.[6] The behaviour was supported by a notice in the drivers' end user license agreement, which warned that use of the drivers with non-genuine FTDI products would "irretrievably damage" them.[6] Critics felt that FTDI's actions were unethical, considering that users may be unaware that their chips were counterfeit, or that Windows had automatically installed a driver meant to disable them.[7][6][5][8] On 22 October 2014, an emergency patch was made to the FTDI drivers in the Linux kernel to recognise devices with the "0000" ID.[9]
